Brochure from Nordrhein-Westfalen emphatically discussing bicycle policy within the framework of ‘short trips&', closely linked to a large number of urban-quality objectives.

  • Many current developments such as demographic change, failing health of the population, climate change and its obvious effects as well as shrinking populations in towns and regions have a common denominator: all are issues closely linked to the idea of short trips. The working group on bicycle-friendly towns, communities and regions in Nordrhein-Westfalen recognises short trips will be a major issue in future and therefore is adapting not only in theory (current aims) but also in actual practice.
Short trips means individual mobility in the near vicinity, for instance on foot or by bicycle, but also with other non-motorised transport modalities (e.g. skates, skateboards). The systematic objective is to create facilities that will allow in particular children, the elderly and families to move with pleasure and confidence in towns. Key elements are attractive street layout and a supply of amenities and welfare services close to home - according to the concept of urban quality of life.
This 52-page brochure discusses extensively the advantages and relevant demands of short trips. It becomes clear that short trips encompass a complete system and when authorities want to consistently promote short trips they will have to take integrated measures in the fields of services, communications and infrastructure, before the numerous advantages will become visible.
