Shared Space is an EU wide philosophy of urban road design. However it is not a new concept and implemented in German guidelines for a long time. The main return from the projects is a substantial improvement of spatial quality in sensible road sections and places. They are dealing with informal social minded rules replacing traffic regulations, particularly traffic signs and traffic lights. In general it can be concluded that in show cases traffic safety indeed has improved. On the other hand there are still noticeable conflicts. Shared Space has limits and requirements of use which are discussed in this article.
