Leeuwarden intends to create optimal connections for cyclists from the large new residential area De Zuidlanden to town - and mainly parking facilities and priority on roundabouts in town.

  • The capital of Friesland province has for years been in the absolute top of bicycle towns. At least as far as bicycle use is concerned. Bicycle policies of Leeuwarden have however rarely been considered exemplary. In the 2002 Fietsbalans Leeuwarden did not shine at all. It did in bicycle use and traffic safety, but directness, comfort and competitiveness left a lot to be desired. Will a new traffic plan and new bicycle report change all this? We consider local policy and the policy for the large new suburb of De Zuidlanden. The greatest distance from De Zuidlanden to the town centre is a little over 4 km. The south side of Leeuwarden is at present a very harsh barrier. The Van Harinxma canal is a major obstacle to cyclists from De Zuidlanden towards the town centre. But not the only one: the city ring road and railroad have to be overcome as well. In order to properly connect the bicycle network to the existing town infrastructure Leeuwarden has ambitious plans: three expensive bicycle routes to the town centre overcoming many obstacles. In town itself parking facilities need to be greatly expanded and many roundabouts are to be transformed in order to provide bicycles with priority.
