Utrecht enlists special green signage to show its inhabitants that attractive recreational facilities are within cycling distance.

Earlier we reported on a trial taking place in Zoetermeer which led to recommendations for improving the cycling routes to the outlying areas – for instance by giving the routes a name. The installation of special signage was also recommended. In the meantime the municipality of Utrecht has not been sitting still and is installing special green signage these days.
Green recreational areas such as Amelisweerd, Haarzuilens, Nedereindseplas en Ruigenhoek are within 3 to 7 cycling kilometres for most inhabitants of Utrecht. To promote these areas and show how easily reachable they are by bike, special green signs have been installed starting at the city centre. The routes do not always take the shortest path, but instead follow attractive and interesting areas in the city. They are also indicated in a special brochure.
