In many Dutch towns more attention is being paid to the attractiveness of the town centre over the past few years. In this context many towns have reconsidered the accessibility of pedestrian areas to cyclists, which has quite often led to political repercussions. These issues have resulted in a wide range of solutions. Clear guidelines for the issue of ‘cyclists in pedestrian areas’ are therefore non-existent, making it completely or almost impossible to substantiate (political) choices with data. As a result there is absolutely no unity in policies or regulations concerning bicycles in pedestrian areas in the Netherlands.
Fietsberaad instructed BRO to hit the streets and see if any lessons could be learned from actual practices. In December of 2004 the investigative report had been prepared. Then, for all 15 town centres that had been investigated, surveys were made of the structures in and around the town centres, and the data acquired were reproduced in maps, identical in scale and image, and supplemented with pictures of the streets concerned. The text of the investigative report and the surveys of the 15 town centres, which may be used as examples, have been combined in this Fietsberaad publication.
