Budapest has introduced a new urban bicycle action plan. The Cycle Budapest programme intends to improve cycling in town in the medium and long terms.

Cars enjoy a considerably higher status than bicycles, according to a Hungarian cycling expert. 'As opposed to the Netherlands, where even royalty rides a bike.' The most tangible proposal in the plan is the construction of 176 kilometres of bike paths before 2013. This means a doubling of the current network. This is expected to result in a 3 to 5 per cent shift in the modal split. Sixty-two public transport junctions will be provided with facilities for Bike&Ride and bike rental systems comparable to that in Paris. Ironically, the Parisian bicycles are manufactured in Hungary.
