Cycling “ticks all the boxes”: health, sustainability, quality of life, trafficcirculation, no emissions, clean and silent. But how to make people cycle? In the Netherlands people cycle because it’s fun, relaxed and safe. Cycle inclusive urban planning can contribute to achieve this.
In order to be efficient and significant, cycling has to be taken into account in many public and private policies, strategies and sectors of activity as a transport mode in its own right. Urban planning and design have to integrate cycling in all fields of the planning proces.
Questions you may put forward in the Master class are:
• How to start with cycling planning?
• What are the best opportunities in my city to promote and facilitate cycling? • How can I involve others and deal with constraints and different interests?
• What can I contribute to the promotion of cycling as a daily mode of transport, serving traffic flow, road safety, air quality, personnel health, urban design and sustainable development?
Target groups are civil servants, planners, urban and landscape designers, architects civil organisation and policy makers.
The international Master Class Cycle Friendly Urban Planning will be held in the Netherlands (Breda) at NHTV from 17 till 20 May 2009 (week after Velo City Brussels). The Master Class will be organized by CROW, KpVV, I-CE and NHTV, all leading Dutch specialists in cycle planning.
