Meter posts are growing more beautiful. The latest not only show the number of passing cyclists, but also their speed and travel time. Road maintenance authorities intend the meter posts to demonstrate that cyclists do matter.

The first meter post, in Apeldoorn, was put into service in 2008 at one of the town’s main cycling routes. This one only showed the numbers of cyclists passing daily and annually. The improved version now operational near Deventer and Twello shows considerably more data. In addition to time and temperature it also displays the actual speed of the passing cyclist – or moped rider. As well as the resultant travel time to the next destination. The data are gathered by means of a loop in the road surface.
