A roundabout, mostly for bicyclists

An unusual bike roundabout has been recently put to use in Zwolle. Bicycles can use it all the way, cars only partial.

The Vondelkade and the Philosofenallee (shown at left and right in the drawing) have been arranged to serve as a bike path/street. But until recently, cyclists had to give way to traffic coming from the Wipstrikkerallee, a busy access road (from below to above in the drawing). As a result, much time was lost waiting.

Introducing traffic lights and giving cyclists priority did not constitute a good solution. The answer turned out to be the cycling roundabout. Cyclists can use the entire roundabout, while motor traffic can only proceed straight ahead or to the right because a median strip (shown in green) prevents making a left turn.

Monitoring this new kind of roundabout is important for Zwolle and other cities in the Netherlands. This provides information about how it performs, which can be used for the deployment of cycling roundabouts elsewhere in Zwolle and other cities. More will be made known at the end of the year.
