In Alphen aan den Rijn the ‘Fietsappel&' (Bike Apple) has been taken into service: an unguarded bicycle parking facility at the train station, where travellers and visitors may park their bicycles free of charge.
The building is made of steel with several floors and shaped like an apple. It accommodates approximately 970 parked bicycles.

‘Fietsappel’ has been designed by Wytze Patijn of Kuiper Compagnons. The concept derives from a work of art in the shape of an apple.
The steel construction has a 27.5 metre diameter and a height of 15.5 metres. The ramp where the bicycles are parked spirals like apple peel along a conical ‘core’ consisting of steel columns.
The outer skin consists of a transparent, spatial frame. As the parking facility is unguarded, a decision was made to open up the parking as much as possible, to encourage social control and stimulate a sense of security.
