Quite a number of bicycles fit onto a car parking space, as revealed by this demonstration – with folding bicycles. The GroenLinks political party, part of the Amsterdam council, feels that more often parking spaces should be adapted to use by bicycles, if necessary part-time only at busy locations in the country&'s capital .

The political party, the third largest in Amsterdam, has made a number of specific proposals to cope with bicycle parking problems. A single car parking space (6 x 2 metres) provides room for 10 to 12 parked bicycles, according to the party. At busy bicycle locations car parking spaces should therefore be adapted to bicycle parking. Structurally by placement of bicycle stands, but also part-time at shops or museums: for instance from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. for cyclists and from 6 p.m. to 9 a.m. for cars. This to be indicated by traffic signs. At busy late-night shops and the catering industry there should, on the other hand, be more room for cyclists at night. In addition the number of bicycle parking squares should be increased, with the added advantage that large-size bicycles and carrier cycles can be parked without causing obstructions.
