On Thursday 9 October, Dutch parliament debated the proposal by the city of Amsterdam to move helmeted riders of so-called &'snorscooters&' (scooters with a maximum speed of 25 km per hour) off the bicycle lane and on to the roadway. The debate was inconclusive: the proposal is not certain to be approved.&

Several political parties are opposed to the idea of different rules in different cities and worry about ‘snorscooter’ drivers’ safety when they have to use the carriageway. The proposal will be supported only if its application is limited to streets where a 30 kilometre per hour speed limit is in force.

The responsible minister promised to explore this wish (expressed by the SP, the Socialist Party) before drafting the amendment to the law. She repeated her firm intention to continue preparations. On the Monday before the parliamentary debate, the Cyclists’ Union handed her a petition calling for a ‘Return of the cycle path to the cyclist’, which was signed by more than 10,000 persons.
