ProRail will be providing the train station in the town of Hardenberg with a gold bicycle stand. In this way ProRail celebrates the 200,000th bicycle parking space realised since the start of the programme Ruimte voor de Fiets (1999).

Overall 100,000 new bicycle parking spaces have been realised, as well as 100,000 spaces that have been updated. Until 2012 another 60,000 new spaces will be added and the rail manager will continue to update existing bicycle parkings. Prorail is the organisation responsible for railway infrastructure in the Netherlands, including bicycle parking facilities at train stations.
On average well over forty per cent of all rail passengers cycle to the train station nowadays. Since 1999 ProRail has provided 157,000 unguarded parking spaces, 30,000 guarded parking spaces and 13,000 bicycle lockers. As demand continues to rise for bicycle parking spaces at train stations, ProRail advocates keeping up the pace of constructing 25,000 parking spaces annually beyond 2012 until 2020 to make up for the projected shortages.
