Not the weather but physical discomforts often cause commuters to prefer car over bicycle, as demonstrated by a study among German bicycle commuters.

Mit dem Rad zur Arbeit is a campaign to encourage Germans to ride a bicycle to work. Whoever did this for at least 20 days between June 1 and August 31, individually or as a team, can win prizes made available by sponsors. Last year 130 000 people participated. A study was conducted among the cyclists by Deutsche Sporthochschule Köln. Participants were questioned, among other things, about the reason for sometimes leaving the bicycle at home. This revealed that not weather conditions, but physical discomforts were the major reason for many to skip a day once in a while. This argument was mentioned by 86 per cent of participants. In adverse weather conditions 64 per cent ignore their bicycles and 42 per cent when a formal-attire meeting is scheduled. Positive factors are bicycle stands immediately at the entrance to work, 33 per cent considers the presence of showers an incentive. The main arguments for participating in the campaign are health (65%), environment (48%) and saving money (34 per cent). The prizes entice 31 per cent into participating.
