An increasing number of Dutch towns are instigating free guarded parking for bicycles. In Nieuwegein use is double already.

Parking a bicycle has been free of charge in Leeuwarden since the end of 2008. Bicycles may be parked safely under cover on two locations in the town centre. And in Amersfoort the -unmanned - parking facility at the train station will be free of charge, a year-long experiment. This measure aims to end the bicycle chaos surrounding the station. In Groningen parking a bicycle in the guarded NS facility at the central station will be free of charge on weekends, starting in 2009. That parking facility is overflowing, particularly on weekends. The guarded parking facility in the Nieuwegein town centre has been free of charge since March 1. The use has increased tremendously. In 2007 over the summer an average of 1,750 bicycles a month were parked there. In 2008 this was an average of 4,900 bicycles a month.
