Being caught between spokes is the most common accident among children aged 3 to 5, apart from falling. They are often transported on the back of a bicycle and their legs are long enough to get caught between the spokes. In 31% of these cases this leads to fractures, and annually 60 children are hospitalised due to the consequences of being caught between spokes. The solution is simple, according to Consument en Veiligheid revealing these data: make sure the spokes are well-screened, by means of a hard plastic screen fixed between the footrests and the wheel. Many parents are oblivious of this danger, they buy a child’s seat and think their child will be safe on their bicycle. Consument en Veiligheid therefore calls on all parents of children aged 3 to 5 to use spoke screens, among others by means of campaigns at day-care centres.
