Continued growth bicycle use Groningen

Bicycle use continues to grow in Groningen. Last year the forty main bicycle routes in the town were used by 230,000 cyclists. That is an almost seven per cent increase compared to 2008. And an increase of over fifteen per cent compared to the year before that.

In order to be able to measure the effectiveness of policies, each autumn local authorities count the number of bicycle movements on well over forty locations in the town. For ages Korrebrug has been the busiest bicycle route in town. Every day 14,500 cyclists use this bike path. This year, too, this bridge was the uncontested number one. At Zonnelaan, connecting the town centre and Zernike, 14,110 cyclists a day were counted, an increase of 33 per cent. This earned it a second place. Number three is Korreweg, with 13,500 cyclists. Of the forty counting points in town there are another three scoring over 10,000 cyclists a day: Eikenlaan, Hereweg and Helperzoom.
