The Urban Bikeway Design Guide is the title of the new design manual of the U.S. National Association of City Transportation Officials. The manual deals mainly with infrastructure, with chapters dedicated to bike lanes, bike paths, intersections, traffic regulation, markings and signage.

Bike lanes are on the increase in the U.S. An inexpensive solution that can be realised in no time and does not meet too much resistance from the very start. As the lanes are often located alongside parked cars, being ‘doored’ is a major source of concern. For that reason buffer zones are used or parking lanes are located to the left of bike lanes. For cyclists wanting to turn left at intersections the two-stage turn marking has been developed: a marked area where cyclists can wait before attempting to turn.
