In May 2014, the Arnhem Nijmegen urban area will embark on a pilot project for direction signs on fast bikeways in the municipalities Overbetuwe, Beuningen, Duiven and Nijmegen-Noord.

Fatal bicycle accidents down by 8% in 2013

In 2013 in the Netherlands, 570 persons died as a result of traffic accidents. That is 80 down on the previous year, a reduction of more than 12%.

Bicyle theft causes serious social damage

Every year in the Netherlands, around 600,000 bicycles undergo an ‘involuntary’ change of ownership. Not just individual cases. According to the RAI (Rijwiel en Automobiel Instituut – Dutch Bicycle and Automobile Institute), serious, well-organised gangs are at work, stealing dozens of bikes at the same time.

Communication between bicycle and cars helps prevent accidents

2015 will see the start of a series of experiments in the Netherlands to test if technology at specially designed traffic junctions can prevent accidents involving cars and cyclists. Sensors in the car and road-side systems will register cyclist's behaviour and pass on the information to oncoming cars.

Zwolle: Dutch Cycle City of the Year 2014

The city of Zwolle has been awarded the Dutch Cycle City for 2014 by the Dutch Cyclists’ Association. The jury, presided by Jan Hendrik Donkers (director general at the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment) praised Zwolle for ‘being a city where the cyclist feels welcome and where this feeling is borne out by the figures’.

Dutch Cycling Embassy supports Brazilian cycling non-profit organizations

Following the visit to Brazil in the beginning of April 2014, the Dutch Cycling Embassy has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with two Brazilian cycling non-profit organizations: Bike Anjo and Instituto DBike. These letters formalize the institutional support of the DCE to both organizations in the promotion of cycling related projects in Brazil.
