1. Rain-sensitive traffic light
Oosterhout, intersection Holtroplaan-Europaweg, rain-sensitive traffic light. Local authorities in Oosterhout installed rain-sensitive traffic lights on July 2, 2007. When it rains cyclists are treated almost as preferentially as buses are. See also video on nu.nl

2. Location and routes
Approximately 17,000 motor vehicles use the intersection Holtroplaan-Europaweg daily. In future Europalaan will gain importance in handling traffic from Oosterhout-Zuid. All legs have a major cycling function, as the intersection is on the route between various residential areas and the town centre. Moreover, the immediate vicinity houses two schools.

3. Lay-out of the intersection
Local authorities hesitated between traffic lights and a roundabout for the reconstruction. Eventually a decision was made in favour of traffic lights, as this provides more opportunities to give priority to high-grade public transport. A roundabout would cause less delay for cyclists. In order to provide cyclists extra service, the rain-sensitive traffic light has been developed. In addition, the new regime has no partial conflicts between motor vehicles and cyclists.

4. Precipitation sensor
The traffic lights have been equipped with a precipitation detector. An infrared sensor in the U-shaped device measures the number of raindrops falling through the U. If the precipitation is actually more than a drizzle, the traffic lights change over to priority for cyclists. The detector costs approximately 500 Euro. For new lights the rain detector may be included in the basic demands. For installation in existing traffic lights there are additional costs for software and hardware.

5. Priority for cyclists
Priority for cyclists is comparable to commercial systems for buses. A cyclist calling in through a loop or push button will receive a green light in the next phase. Other directions (car, bus or bicycle) that do not cause a conflict may profit as well. In case a bus calls in on a conflicting direction at the same time as the bicycle, the bus will have priority. Moreover, cyclists can not receive extra green once maximum cycle time is reached, to prevent endangering the circulation of motor vehicles. Local authorities intend to evaluate the regime eventually.
