The new routes consist for the most part of bicycle lanes with occasional separate bike paths at roundabouts. In addition new blue asphalt has been laid and intersections have been provided with advanced stop lines and mirrors.
According to new data by Transport for London cycling has increased by 46 and 83 per cent respectively on the two routes previously opened for use. At some locations the number of cyclists has even doubled. Three-quarters of cyclists use the routes for commuting and 80 per cent feel that safety has improved and they are granted more space on the road. The increase in the number of cyclists has anyway been determined by counting on the routes. It is not known to which degree cyclists are drawn from adjoining routes. As part of the agreement with Barclays adjoining boroughs and companies will receive subsidies for the construction of bicycle parking facilities and for cycling education. Overall cycling has increased by 15 per cent on the main routes in London over the past year, and by as much as 150 per cent since 2000.
