Ethnic minorities

People of non-western descent generally use bicycles less often than native Dutchmen, a fact that has been known for a long time. A 1995 study, Inhabitants of ageing residential neighbourhoods (Bewoners van oude stadswijken), supported this fact. It was however not yet known how much less often, whether there are any differences between generations and between countries of origin. An important extensive study into these issues was conducted in 2006: Fietsberaad publication 11a. Bicycle use by ethnic minorities scrutinized (Fietsberaad publicatie 11a. Fietsgebruik van allochtonen nader belicht). Subsequently a prognosis of the number of inhabitants of foreign descent has been translated into consequences for bicycle use: Prognoses ethnic minorities and bicycle use (Prognoses allochtonen en fietsgebruik). Opportunities for policies to encourage bicycle use among ethnic minorities: Fietsberaadpublication 11c: Ethnic minorities and bicycle policy.
