Stimulating the use of bicycles is regularly met with objections, not in the least in political and administrative circles. The recurring themes are always:
• Cycling is dangerous.
• Cycling is a thing of the past, when distances were shorter.
• Bicycle policies are of no use, people will drive anyhow.
It is necessary and possible to refute these assertions.
In the period 1996-1999, there was little change in the national figures regarding bicycle use: the same percentage in modal split and little change in length of journeys.
OVG analyses show that people who live within three kilometres of the town centre make more short journeys.
